Cost Estimate Preparation: This cost estimate was prepared on May 11, 2023 for the Fall 2023 semester. These costs are approximations and are subject to change. Most of the costs listed above are based on expenses published by CIEE.
Exchange Rate: USD $1 = 0.911 EUR (5/11/23)
Lodging: Estimate based on cost for student residence halls or homestay.
Meals: Meals are included in a homestay, but not in student residence halls.
Personal Expenses: This estimate is meant to cover general expenses of college life, including additional course supplies, photocopying, toiletries, snacks, cell phone, etc. Personal expenses do not include any entertainment or vacation travel costs.
Local Transportation: Monthly metro/bus pass.
Books and Supplies: CIEE estimate for books/supplies.
Additional Program Information: CIEE charges a $300 nonrefundable deposit which Penn pays to CIEE as a courtesy for Penn students. This happens once students change their application to "committed" in the Penn Abroad portal. However, if the student decides not to participate in the program after committing, or does not meet relevant academic performance requirements by the end of the semester prior to studying abroad, they will be billed $300 by the University of Pennsylvania to cover the nonrefundable deposit.
The Visa Fee estimate also includes $18 for the FBI Background check.
