Exchange rate: 95 Japanese Yen (JPY) = $1.00 USD (per KCJS Budget Sheet).
Program Fee: The program fee covers the cost of some program activities and either the homestay with two meals a day plus a daily allowance for lunch OR a shared apartment with a daily allowance for lunch. The $5500 program fee will be billed to the student directly; payment should be remitted directly to Columbia University.
Meals: On top of the program fee, students who choose the apartment option should budget $2000 for meals, as included in the estimated budget above (calculated at $500/month for 4 months). Students who choose the homestay option should budget $1000 for snacks and occasional meals out (calculated at $250/month for 4 months).
Visa: Students may need to travel to a consulate to apply for and/or pick up a visa. These are additional variable costs, to be calculated individually by the student.
Roundtrip Flight from Gateway City: The flight expense listed above is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from the gateway city of New York to Kyoto. However, you may depart from the city of your choice.
***Students living outside the gateway city may need to arrange for a connecting flight to a gateway city at an additional variable cost, to be calculated individually by the student.
