Cost Estimate Preparation: This cost estimate was prepared on October 7, 2022 for the Spring 2023 semester. These costs are approximations and are subject to change. Most of the costs listed above are based on expenses published by CIEE.

Exchange Rate: USD $1 = 1.014 EUR (10/7/22)

Lodging: Students have the option of living in a homestay or in the student residence halls; students will be charged the same housing fee regardless of their housing selection. Students are encouraged to live with host families for immersion purposes. For students who reside in the dorms, meals are not included and are the responsibility of the student. Students who live in the homestay have all breakfasts and 7 meals per week covered in the lodging fee. Students should budget for all other meals.

Meals: Meals are included in a homestay, but not in student dorms.

Personal Expenses: This estimate is meant to cover general expenses of college life, including additional course supplies, photocopying, toiletries, snacks, cell phone, etc. Personal expenses do not include any entertainment or vacation travel costs.

Books and Supplies: CIEE estimate for books/supplies.

Visa Fee: This includes the charge for visa processing at the Portuguese consulate and the charge for the FBI background check, but not the cost of fingerprints.

Additional Program Information: CIEE charges a $300 nonrefundable deposit which Penn pays to CIEE as a courtesy for Penn students. This happens once students change their application to "committed" in the Penn Abroad portal. However, if the student decides not to participate in the program after committing, or does not meet relevant academic performance requirements by the end of the semester prior to studying abroad, they will be billed $300 by the University of Pennsylvania to cover the nonrefundable deposit.

Students enrolled in classes at the local host university will have classes and/or exams that go past the published CIEE program end date. While the housing price for longer stays will not change, students who stay longer should budget additional money for local transport, meals, and personal expenses.
