Cost Estimate Preparation: This cost estimate was prepared on October 30, 2019 for the Spring 2020 semester. These costs are approximations and are subject to change.
Exchange Rate: USD $1 = 108.92 Japanese Yen (October 30, 2019)
Program Fee: The Program Fee covers housing, some meals, program activities, trips and student services.
Lodging: KCJS staff members place students in homestays or apartments based on individual preferences. The cost of lodging is included in the Program Fee.
Meals: The cost for meals will vary widely depending on the housing option you select and individual spending habits. For students in homestays, the Program Fee covers two meals every day: breakfast and dinner with the homestay family, and an ¥800 daily lunch allowance. Student should budget approximately $250 per month for meals not included in the program fee.
Those living in apartments will receive an ¥800 daily lunch allowance, but must provide for their own breakfasts and dinners. Student should budget approximately $500 per month for meals not included in the program fee.
Personal Expenses: This estimate is meant to cover general expenses of college life, including additional course supplies, photocopying, toiletries, snacks, cell phone, etc. Personal expenses do not include any entertainment or vacation travel costs. Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. They may include entertainment and personal travel.
Local Transportation: Students will be responsible for paying for transportation to and from the airport in Kyoto at the start and end of the program. Students must also pay for local transportation around the city. Students will pay a maximum of $50 per month for transportation costs. If costs exceed this amount, KCJS will cover the cost.
Books and Supplies: Textbooks and other course materials will be distributed after the language placement exam in Kyoto.
Cell phone: All students are required have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program.
Visa Fee: There are no visa fees for US Citizens, and fees are waived for some 50+ nationalities found at the following link: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/english/html/travel_and_visa/visafees.html.
