Notes:
This cost estimate was completed on May 24, 2016 for academic year 2016 - 2017. These costs are approximations and are subject to change. Please refer to the fees published by the Kyoto Consortium of Japanese Studies for more information. Please note that this includes only figures for the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters and does not account for the gap between semesters.  Students should calculate based on their individual circumstance.

The program fee covers the cost of some program activities and either the homestay with two meals a day plus a daily allowance for lunch OR a shared apartment with a daily allowance for lunch. Students who choose the apartment option should budget an additional $4000 for meals as provided for in the estimated budget (calculated at $500/month for 8 months). Additional meals for home stay students are calculated at $250/month for 8 months to account for snacks and occasional meals out). The $11000 program fee will be billed to the student directly in two installments of $5500 each during the fall and spring semesters; payment should be remitted directly to Columbia University.

The round trip flight expense listed is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from New York to Kyoto. Students may need to arrange for a connecting flight to a gateway city. Additionally, students may need to travel to a consulate to apply for and/or pick up a visa. These are additional variable costs, to be calculated individually by the student.
